The California Supreme Court speaks

… and it says that the state may not legally bar same-sex marriage.

It would seem that this will lead to California joining Massachusetts, currently the only US state where same-sex marriage is legal.

Also ahead on this front are Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire and my home state of New Jersey. These four states permit civil unions, which many view as a stepping stone to full marriage rights at some point in the future.

Governor Corzine has said he will happily sign a bill awarding full marriage rights to same-sex couples if/when it crosses his desk, which would make New Jersey the first state to enact same-sex marriage through legislation rather than courts. After being presented with a report from Garden State Equality about the ineffectiveness of civil unions, Corzine made the offer. But he said he wouldn’t sign a bill until after the presidential elections, because he doesn’t want it turning into an “election issue.”
