It would seem that this will lead to California joining Massachusetts, currently the only US state where same-sex marriage is legal.

Also ahead on this front are Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire and my home state of New Jersey. These four states permit civil unions, which many view as a stepping stone to full marriage rights at some point in the future.
